e-Learning and SARS (Hong Kong, China)

When Hong Kong was attacked by the deadly virus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in March 2003, schools closed for more than a month but education for a million students continued. Hong Kong Education City quickly enhanced its web-based learning programme to meet the urgent needs of the education community and provided a public forum for communication and support during the public health crisis.

Motivations:
Outstanding solutions are needed to solve huge problems. When the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) attacked Hong Kong in March 2003, schools closed for more than a month but education for more than a million students continued thanks to the inspirational "e-Learning and SARS" initiative. E-Learning through the HKedCity portal served as the rallying point for cooperation from all sectors of the community, who united to turn the crisis situation into a mass learning opportunity:

Youth Have a Say against Terrorism (Macedonia)

Youth from Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia is rising their voice against terrorism in the region by outreaching excluded and marginalized groups, aiming to foster dialogue and deliver message for peace and tolerance.

Motivations:
This project is a wonderful example of an innovative use of ICTs to promote tolerance and raise youth awareness against terrorism. The project created a virtual community of learners and educators caring about tolerance and raising their voice against terrorism across two countries and a region. It successfully bridged the differences between participating students and educators, demonstrating that a creative and courageous use of ICTs can help overcome situational and social barriers and achieve very important goals.
