Came
to Britain and obtained a M.Phil in Electronic Engineering, University
of Bradford. He shifted from engineering to social studies of technology
and completed a doctorate at the Science Studies Unit, The University
of Edinburgh. His research interests centre on theories of innovation
and technology management and strategy, particularly on his original
sociotechnical constituencies approach, now widely applied to understand
and inform the strategic development of a variety of information
and communication technologies. A particular interest has been to
transform this academic theorisation into instruments of practical
application for government and company technology strategies. These
include "evolving business plans," "customised user
research," and "trend-mapping." Alfonso has worked
in numerous occasions as consultant, evaluator, reviewer and rapporteur
for directorates DGIII, DGXII, DGXIII of the European Community.
He has published numerous books, papers and reports.
