One of the very important questions confronting many societies today is how to utilise the developments in emerging technologies to bring the physically and/or socially disabled sector into the mainstream?
The SITA project has been endeavouring to unravel the answers to these since the 1980's. More recent support from the World Bank program, InfoDev, has enabled SITA to develop a project built around gender empowerment, with a particular focus on allowing women from low income families in Delhi to fulfil their aspirations to learn computer skills
Trainees have been given intensive hands-on computer training, based on real life exercises being attached to an employer. SITA has developed an extensive resource package consisting of modern office computer skills, a multi-lingual training manual, interactive multimedia modules for self learning and other excellent developmental support materials.
It is a superb example of a grass roots, bottom up strategy in a much needed area, "If you teach women, you're changing the future, because women are the natural teachers of the coming generations."
